Mammograms

Breast screening aims to detect breast cancer at an earlier stage, often before the woman is aware of any problem. Currently the NHS Breast Screening Programme saves an estimated 1400 lives each year in England.

Women aged between 50 and 70 are advised to attend the Breast Screening Unit every 3 years for a mammography. This is to make sure that we can check and detect any abnormalities as soon as possible.

Screening units do not offer drop-in screening on request and are by appointment only.

These invitations are sent out by the local breast unit and are automatically sent up until their 71st birthday.

Women aged 71 or over can contact their breast screening unit to make an appointment every 3 years.

Women with breast symptoms are advised to contact their GP should they experience any breast symptoms.
