Prescriptions
Find out how to get a repeat prescription, how much prescriptions cost and how your local pharmacist can help you without having to see your GP.
What is a repeat prescription?
A repeat prescription refers to a medication prescription that allows you to obtain the same medication on multiple occasions without needing to see your GP or prescriber each time.
All repeat prescriptions will need to be requested, they are not automatically generated.
In May 2023 we launched a centralised Prescribing Hub which is supported by our pharmacy team at Northern Arc PCN and serves our three sites at Pioneer Medical Group (Bradgate Surgery, Avonmouth Medical Centre, and Ridingleaze Health Hub) as well as Shirehampton Group Practice.
The Prescribing Hub team consists of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and prescribing clerks, and its main purpose is to bring a simplified approach to your medication needs by providing a safe, prompt, and efficient service.
We aim to process all prescription requests within 48-72 hours (this does not include weekends or bank holidays).
How can I request my repeat prescription?
Important
NHS App
To enhance your experience and process your orders faster, we encourage all patients to use our NHS App for repeat prescription requests, turning on their notifications. The app provides a quick, easy, and convenient way to order your medication 24/7, with no need to wait for email responses.
Benefits of using the app:
- Faster processing: your request goes straight to the pharmacy system, reducing delays
- 24/7 availability: you can request your repeat prescription at any time, from anywhere
- Easy tracking: stay updated on the status of your prescription in real time
- Change pharmacies: you can choose/change which pharmacy to collect from
With NHS app you will also have access to your prescription’s barcode which makes it easier to take to a different pharmacy in case of supply disruption. You will be able to see when your prescriptions have been sent to the pharmacy, or any reasons your GP may have given to reject your request.
We kindly request that all repeat prescription orders be made through the app to ensure a faster and more efficient service.
Please visit our NHS App page to get started.
Please see alternative methods below
Please note, in exceptional circumstances we will accept paper requests from vulnerable patients who would otherwise struggle to request medication electronically. We don’t recommend this way, as this is not a robust enough system, and becomes highly inefficient if many patients use it. Also, we don’t have the means to audit these requests, which means they might get overlooked. If you can place a request via any other method, you are helping us as well as patients who don’t have a choice. Thank you.
Nominating a pharmacy
When you order a repeat prescription online, you will have to nominate a pharmacy to prepare your prescription and for you to pick it up from.
You can nominate a pharmacy by using the NHS App or logging into the NHS website using a web browser. A high street pharmacy is where you collect your prescriptions in person. If you have chosen an online-only pharmacy, then they will send your prescription in the post.
If you order your prescription online:
- You will no longer need to collect paper prescriptions from our surgery.
- Your nominated pharmacy will have your prescriptions ready to collect until you change or remove them.
For more information about nominating a pharmacy, visit the Nominate a Pharmacy page on the NHS website.
How your pharmacy can help
Pharmacists are qualified healthcare professionals who can help you with minor health concerns. They can offer medical advice and over-the-counter medicines for minor illnesses like coughs, colds, tummy problems and aches and pains. Find out more here.
Prescription charges
The Government provides help for those who have difficulty paying NHS prescriptions. You can find out more about whether you’re entitled to support from the Government on the NHS Prescription charges page on the NHS website.
